We are overjoyed to have such wonderful community participation with incredible longevity of service and enjoyment of the festival. We are also excited by the next phases of the SGPF in the years to come. As such, we welcome poetry lovers of all ages and experience to join us for the events below. This year’s festival has a series of events including panels, workshops, and social events along with our annual reading events.

3:00pm - 4:00pm: Sunken Garden Poetry Festival – Poetry and Pets for Kids

Our founder, Theodate Pope Riddle, loved her pets almost as much as she loved Hill-Stead! Here is a photo of her with her dog, Jim Jam, named after writer Henry James (1843–1916). Enjoy a drop-in activity where families can compose poems to celebrate their four-legged companions! Bring a photo of your pet (leashed dogs welcome) and create a rhyme to immortalize your love.

Free admission for all

7:00pm - 11:00pm: Sunken Garden Poetry Festival – Legacy Film Night

For thirty years, Hill-Stead has gathered an incredible roster of poets at our Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. These readings have been faithfully documented by Morrow Jones with assistance from Simsbury Community Television. To mark this anniversary, we are rewinding the tapes to create a film of memorable highlights and sharing the retrospective for the first time. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime movie night and allow yourself to time travel back in time to experience again the best of the best.

Bring a blanket, chairs, and popcorn for your comfort.
