Established in 1997, the Northern Arizona Book Festival (NOAZBF) is a literary nonprofit based out of Kin?aní (a.k.a., the bordertown of Flagstaff, Arizona). It coordinates programming that reflects the literary interests and cultural issues that define life in the Colorado Plateau region.
The festival combines traditional modes (such as readings, panels, discussions, and book fairs) with an array of other modes (workshops, screenings, performances, hands-on activities, and immersive experiences) so participants can discover new entry points into the literary arts. The festival partners with a wide array of non-profits, presses, businesses, and community organizations to increase both literacy and cultural literacy.
The NOAZBF has developed four critical areas of emphasis. The Indigenous Writers Symposium addresses literature and aesthetics through issues such as cultural literacy, Native sovereignty, decolonial theory, applied Indigenous studies, language preservation efforts, and ways traditional oral storytelling intersects with discourses in contemporary literature. The Young Readers’ Fest focuses on making literature fun, relevant, and accessible for youth while empowering marginalized identities in age-appropriate ways. The Environmental Humanities Series examines the intersection of climate science with humanities disciplines. Off the Page events bring literature to vivid life for audiences through installation, theater, dance, multimedia, performance, and music.
