Island Wines (Corsica, Azores, Santornini, Canary Islands, Sardinia, Etna)

Join wine writer and critic Alder Yarrow of JancisRobinson.Com for a journey to the islands (of wine!). Islands are special places. Most of us have experienced the magical combination of light, weather and landscape that somehow have the ability to change our perspectives on life. Wines grown on islands almost always have special qualities. Whether they are raised on fiery volcanos, windswept archipelagos, tropical paradises, and stony sea outcrops, island wines might just blow your mind. Come taste some unusual wines from some of the most interesting places that wines can grow. It’s a tasting guaranteed to transport your senses and introduce you to some grapes and places that are so far off the beaten path you have to take a boat to get there. Island attire optional.

1:30-2:30: Does Burgundy Speak German at Matsuhisa

Burgundy is the benchmark to which all great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir aspire, and wines like Richebourg and Corton can be at once thrilling yet stunningly expensive to drink. If the magic of Burgundy is in its soil and climate, then Germany's current wine scene should have your attention—regions like Pfalz and Baden issue Burgundian varieties that invite comparison to the famous French Grand Crus. Master Sommelier Jesse Becker will lead a panel discussion with winemakers Fritz Becker of VDP. Weingut Friedirch Becker and Claus Burmesiter from VDP. Weingut Heitlinger, two leading German wine estates focused on Burgundian varieties, with commentary from sommelier Andreas Harl from Matsuhisa Vail and Zack Musick from The German Wine Collection.
